A wave of arrests swept across London and beyond last week, as police dismantled a network fueling drug crime and other serious offenses. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody, marking a significant blow to organized criminal activity impacting communities nationwide.
The operation, spanning three days and involving eight police forces, yielded a substantial haul: 85 arrests for drug-related offenses, the seizure of 85 vehicles, the discovery of 11 weapons, and the recovery of over £10,840 in cash. At the heart of the success lay Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. Specialized cameras scanned license plates, instantly cross-referencing them with extensive databases to identify vehicles linked to criminal activity – stolen cars, uninsured vehicles, and those frequently used by known offenders. This technology proved instrumental in disrupting county drug lines, tackling weapon possession, and even uncovering instances of modern slavery.

However, the High Court ultimately ruled in favor of the Metropolitan Police, allowing them to continue expanding their use of ANPR. This decision underscores the perceived necessity of such tools in combating crime and maintaining public safety.
Superintendent Francessca-May Robinson, who spearheaded the operation, emphasized the unwavering commitment of the police. “The result demonstrates the Met’s continued commitment to disrupt and dismantle organized crime groups operating across London,” she stated. “Our multi-force approach and the ANPR technology enabled officers to identify offenders, target criminal networks and remove those causing harm from our streets.”
