Carol McGiffin has revisited a chapter of her life she clearly wishes remained closed – her marriage to radio personality Chris Evans. Looking back on their seven-year union, from 1991 to 1998, she admits to a startling realization: she genuinely doesn’t understand what drew her to the altar with him in the first place.
The formerLoose Womenstar doesn’t mince words when describing the relationship. She confesses to periods where she actively disliked her husband, a sentiment that lingered “for quite a lot of the time.” This wasn’t a whirlwind romance built on mutual admiration, but a connection she now views as a profound misstep.
The unraveling wasn’t swift. Though the initial split occurred after just two years, the divorce itself took another five years to finalize. McGiffin previously described being “swept along” by the romance, desperately convincing herself that life without Evans was impossible. Now, she attributes that feeling to manipulation.
“He was nothing without me, nothing,” she stated, recalling a time when she felt she held the power in the dynamic. She’s relieved the relationship ultimately failed, believing she stubbornly persevered for far too long. Her past memoir,Oh, Carol!, painted an even starker picture, describing how the marriage transformed her into someone unrecognizable.
She likened Evans to a dangerous addiction, a “Class A drug” she was powerless to resist. Yet, amidst the intensity, she details arguments over trivial matters, and accusations of deliberate attempts to provoke jealousy through late nights and flirtatious behavior with former flames. The relationship was a volatile mix of passion and pain.
Even the engagement itself felt wrong, a decision made against her better judgment. The end came abruptly and publicly, announced on his radio show without a prior conversation. McGiffin described feeling “hit by a truck,” blindsided by the callousness of the revelation. Attempts at reconciliation proved futile, leading to a final, definitive break in 1993.
The aftermath left her with exhausting memories and a complete severing of ties. She recalls Evans being utterly draining to be around, and ultimately, the memories she retained were far from pleasant. Today, she’s found happiness with her current husband, Mark Cassidy, whom she married in 2018.
Evans’ romantic history has also drawn scrutiny. His marriage to Billie Piper, when she was a teenager, sparked controversy. He is now married to Natasha Shishmanian, with whom he shares four children. While his life has moved forward, McGiffin’s candid reflections offer a raw and honest look back at a relationship that left a lasting impact.
