Trump Releases New Photos in Apparent Jab at Meloni as NATO Summit Brings Leaders Together

Tensions between the United States and Italy have intensified as a public feud between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to escalate. The rift between the two leaders has grown in the lead up to the NATO summit in Turkey, where both Trump and Meloni are in attendance. Trump recently posted a message on social media, further fueling the dispute. The two leaders have had a complicated relationship, with a spat beginning in June after Trump made comments about Meloni at the G7 summit.

The dispute started when Trump claimed that Meloni "begged" him to take a photo at the G7, which Meloni denied. The Italian Foreign Minister responded to Trump's statements, saying that they speak for themselves and that transatlantic relations go beyond individual statements. The latest exchange is not the first flashpoint between the two leaders, as Trump previously mocked Meloni's interest in taking a photo with him at the G7 in June. Meloni fired back, saying that Trump does not show the same determination with enemies of the West and the United States.

There have been looming tensions between the two leaders, particularly after Meloni distanced herself from the United States amid domestic and political pressure over the Middle East conflict. Trump criticized Meloni for not allowing the US to use Italy's landing strips and runways, calling it a logistical inconvenience. He also commented on Meloni's popularity in Italy, suggesting that it may be low due to her decision to deny the US use of Italian bases. Italy remains a key US security hub in Europe, hosting nearly 13,000 active-duty American troops across six bases.

Despite the tensions, there is no scheduled bilateral meeting between Trump and Meloni in Turkey this week. However, the two leaders may still interact at the NATO leaders' dinner, plenary sessions, and leaders' gatherings. The Italian Prime Minister's office declined to comment on the situation, and the White House has not responded to requests for comment. The feud between Trump and Meloni has significant implications for US-Italy relations and the broader transatlantic alliance.
