A sweeping crackdown on fraud, waste, and abuse within vital healthcare programs is underway, spearheaded by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and gaining momentum across the nation. The effort, led by Dr. Mehmet Oz, is focusing intensely on identifying and dismantling schemes that siphon billions of dollars from American taxpayers.
The initial focus has landed on five states – Minnesota, California, Florida, New York, and Maine – with warnings extended to all fifty governors. This escalation stems from shocking revelations, including a $250 million fraud scheme in Minnesota known as “Feeding Our Future,” which exposed deep vulnerabilities in oversight.
The investigation isn’t limited to a single program. CMS is meticulously examining Medicaid and hospice care, uncovering disturbing patterns of abuse. A particularly alarming trend involves potential foreign influence, with evidence suggesting involvement from governments like Cuba and organized crime groups from Russia and China.
In South Florida, investigators discovered a staggering number of durable medical equipment suppliers – selling items like wheelchairs and knee braces – exceeding even the number of McDonald’s restaurants. This disproportionate concentration immediately raised red flags, signaling a potential hotbed for fraudulent activity.
A nationwide moratorium targeting durable medical equipment suppliers, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) was announced in February by a task force led by Vice President JD Vance. The task force is dedicated to ensuring taxpayer dollars are used responsibly and effectively.
The scope of the fraud extends beyond equipment. A disturbing investigation in Los Angeles led to the suspension of over 400 hospices. These facilities, intended for individuals with a limited life expectancy, exhibited unusually high patient survival rates, raising serious questions about the legitimacy of their services.
Investigators found instances of doctors overseeing patients in multiple hospices simultaneously, and concerns arose regarding foreign ownership and deliberate underreporting of patient outcomes to evade scrutiny. Evidence of this hospice fraud was initially brought to the attention of California Governor Gavin Newsom back in 2022.
Dr. Oz has issued a direct challenge to all 50 states, demanding a swift “revalidation” of high-risk Medicaid providers. Governors and state Medicaid leaders were given a mere ten business days to commit to this process and outline a timetable for a broader provider review.
The federal government is prepared to audit states that fail to comply with this request, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. The goal is to verify that all Medicaid services are legitimate and necessary, scrutinizing even seemingly innocuous claims.
Examples of questionable services now under review include autism babysitters, non-emergency medical transport, and even assistance with grocery shopping. Investigators are questioning the qualifications of those providing these services and whether they fall within the scope of Medicaid coverage.
