The House of Representatives passed a bill to make Daylight Savings permanent on Tuesday, with a vote of 308-117.
The bill, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, will now head to the Senate for consideration.
Back in May, President Trump touted the bill, saying it would make Daylight Saving Time permanent and remove the requirement for Americans to adjust their clocks twice a year.
Trump stated, “This is so important in that Hundreds of Millions of Dollars are spent every year by people, Cities, and States, being forced to change their Clocks.” He also mentioned the cost of renting or using heavy equipment to change clocks, which he deemed prohibitive.
The House will be attaching The Sunshine Protection Act to a highway bill, according to Trump.
“I am going to work very hard to see The Sunshine Protection Act signed into Law. It’s time that people can stop worrying about the “Clock,” not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production,” Trump said.
Not everyone supports the Sunshine Protection Act, however.
In 2022, the Senate unanimously approved the act, but it stalled over concerns about dark morning commutes.
The bill failed to advance in the House in 2022, and while some believe it will help reduce seasonal depression, others argue it isn’t safe for children.
Some critics have expressed concerns about the potential impact on children's safety, with one group stating, “We should not have kids going to school in the dark.”
