Microsoft Announces 4,800 Job Cuts to Accelerate AI Transformation

Microsoft Announces 4,800 Job Cuts to Accelerate AI Transformation

Microsoft announced a reduction of 4,800 jobs and a restructuring of its Xbox division as it seeks to adjust its business model for the rapid evolution of technology and the expanding role of artificial intelligence.

Chief People Officer Amy Coleman emphasized that technology is transforming faster than ever and that companies must adapt to survive. She added that artificial intelligence is reshaping workflows rather than outright replacing the workforce affected by the layoffs.

The move follows a broader industry trend in which tech firms are cutting staff to free capital for expensive AI hardware and large data centers. Meta recently announced 8,000 job cuts to lower costs while investing heavily in AI initiatives.

The wave of layoffs and the rise of AI companies have prompted lawmakers to express concern about potential mass unemployment, urging new regulations to safeguard jobs and advocating for government stakes in major firms.

Microsoft’s market value has fallen by nearly a fifth this year. In response, the company plans a $2.5 billion investment in Microsoft Frontier Co., deploying 6,000 engineering experts to collaborate directly with customers on custom AI solutions.

Xbox will close four key studios—Double Fine, Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs—and shift its focus toward high-priority projects such as Minecraft and King, the developer of Candy Crush.
