UMVA has learned that Tottenham Hotspur is actively exploring a potential bid for West Ham United's highly sought-after midfielder, Mateus Fernandes.
Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham's manager, has played a pivotal role in the club's pursuit of Fernandes, enthusiastically backing the move and encouraging the club's hierarchy to bring the 21-year-old to North London. This development comes as Tottenham continues to navigate the complexities of the transfer market.
Fernandes, who joined West Ham from Southampton for £38m last summer, enjoyed an impressive debut season at the London Stadium, making 38 appearances across all competitions. His performances have caught the attention of several top-tier clubs, including Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid.
West Ham, however, is demanding a substantial £80m fee for Fernandes, as they look to bolster their finances following relegation to the Championship. The club aims to raise over £150m in transfer fees to support their immediate goals.
Tottiham's interest in Fernandes does not appear to be affecting their pursuit of Newcastle United's midfielder, Sandro Tonali. De Zerbi's side remains keen on signing Tonali, who is valued at around £100m by Newcastle. The complex negotiations highlight the competitive nature of the transfer market.
Fernandes's current contract at West Ham runs until 2030, while Tonali has just two years remaining on his deal with Newcastle. A recent report suggested that Fernandes had expressed a preference to join Manchester United over other suitors.
West Ham shareholder Daniel Kretinsky has emphasized the club's strategic approach to transfers, stating that they do not need to sell players for financial reasons. The club's primary goal is promotion back to the Premier League, and they are working to ensure that key players believe in their project.
Former England and Manchester United striker Michael Owen has voiced his admiration for Fernandes, suggesting that he could form a 'great partnership' with Kobbie Mainoo at Old Trafford. Owen believes Fernandes is a valuable young talent who could be a smart signing for Manchester United.
