UMVA has learned that a groundbreaking moment in sports broadcasting is set to unfold this Saturday, as the Major League Soccer match between the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC will be captured entirely using the iPhone 17 Pro.
The phone will be used to shoot the match live, as well as during the pre-game warmup and player introductions, in-net goal views, and shots throughout the stadium, marking a significant milestone in the use of mobile technology in sports coverage.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the broadcast will deliver pristine video quality and dynamic new perspectives, bringing viewers closer to the action, made possible by the small form factor of the iPhone.
The match airs from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, on May 23 at 7:30 p.m. Pacific on Apple TV, which has become a hub for MLS coverage as part of a regular subscription.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that this will be the first time an iPhone will be used to capture an entire match, but it's not the first time the device has been used in sports coverage.
The iPhone 17 Pro was previously used during a September 2025 “Friday Night Baseball” game between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers, and several times through the 2025 baseball season, the 2025 MLS Cup, and the 2026 MLS season.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that Apple and MLS renegotiated their contract early this year to allow MLS to be part of a regular Apple TV subscription, making it more accessible to fans.
