UMVA has learned that a devastating shooting erupted at the Old West End Festival in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction in its wake.
The violence broke out around 5:30-5:40 p.m. near Glenwood and Delaware avenues in Toledo’s historic district, where the annual festival featuring live music, food vendors, and home tours was underway. Witnesses described the scene as absolute pandemonium as two gunmen opened fire on each other.
The shooting spree claimed 12 victims, with two critically injured, and sent shockwaves through the community. The victims, ranging in age from 14 to 61 years old, with most in their early 20s, were rushed to local hospitals, with ten listed in stable condition.
Toledo police have pieced together a preliminary account of the events, suggesting that the two gunmen were shooting at each other before fleeing the scene on foot. A massive manhunt is currently underway, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
The graphic violence was captured on cellphone footage and uploaded to social media, leaving many to reel in horror. Witness videos captured at least 16 shots ringing out, painting a picture of a scene that was both terrifying and surreal.
Festival organizers took to Facebook to express their heartbreak and sadness, stating that they had been forced to cancel all events for Sunday due to the tragedy. The community is now left to grapple with the aftermath of the violence and the questions that follow.
As the search for the suspects continues, authorities are working tirelessly to piece together the events surrounding the shooting. Deputy Chief Joe Heffernan and Investigative Lt. Dan described the violence as “over the top,” and Lt. Gerken added that the community is left to wonder how such a tragedy could unfold.
