UMVA has learned that the Justice Department is demanding sanctuary states to stop a risky policy that endangers Homeland Security agents, warning that the current approach could unravel critical investigations.
The policy revolves around the issuance of “undercover” license plates—special tags that shield the identities of federal agents operating in the shadows. When agents are forced onto ordinary plates stamped with “U.S. Government,” their cover is blown, exposing them to violent retaliation.
In a stark warning, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate told several states, including Washington, that their motor vehicle agencies are refusing to grant these covert plates to DHS while still providing them to local police. He warned that this double standard violates the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause and threatens public safety.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Washington’s Department of Licensing has been blocking the plates for federal officers but continuing the practice for state and local law‑enforcement officers. The discrepancy, Shumate argues, could allow suspects to spot federal agents, flee the scene, destroy evidence, or even launch attacks.
The Justice Department has set a May 22 deadline for Washington to prove compliance, threatening swift judicial action if the state does not reverse its stance. The letter warned that continued refusal could jeopardize investigations into terrorists, drug traffickers, and fraudsters, putting both officers and civilians at heightened risk.
Similar pressure is mounting in other sanctuary jurisdictions, with Oregon and Massachusetts also under scrutiny for their handling of undercover plate requests. The federal push aims to restore a uniform shield for agents across the nation, ensuring that no suspect can exploit a bureaucratic loophole to evade capture.
