BRONX BETRAYED: Politician's Cuts Leave Families DEFENSELESS!

BRONX BETRAYED: Politician's Cuts Leave Families DEFENSELESS!

A growing wave of fear is washing over The Bronx as parents plead for increased police presence near a local elementary school. Their children face daily peril at a notoriously dangerous intersection, a corner they believe is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Over a thousand signatures now bolster the families of Zeta Bronx Tremont Park Lower Elementary school, demanding a dedicated NYPD crossing guard. The intersection of Arthur Avenue and Tremont Avenue, a gateway to a major highway, has become a source of constant anxiety, with cars speeding and drivers routinely disregarding traffic laws.

“The situation is very horrible for the kids and the parents too,” says Aimee, a concerned mother. “Small accidents happen constantly, and it worries us a lot. We feel ignored, and we need to raise our voices for the entire school community.”

Parents describe near misses as a regular occurrence, witnessing reckless turns and abrupt stops as children navigate the busy crossing. Despite the visible danger, nearby police vehicles often sit unoccupied, belonging to a station that parents say isn’t actively monitoring the area.

Christine, another parent, explains the school’s long struggle to secure assistance. “We’ve been trying for a long time, but we were told they didn’t have anyone available.” The lack of response fuels a growing sense of desperation and abandonment.

The escalating concerns come as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani pursues cuts to the NYPD budget and resists calls for increased staffing. This policy clashes sharply with the urgent safety needs expressed by families in The Bronx.

Paola, a parent who previously supported the mayor, now voices her growing fear. “Removing resources is a step in the wrong direction when our schools and children clearly need more support. We need preventive officers and programs to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

She adds, “I initially had a lot of faith in Mayor Mamdani, but I’m starting to get scared. He doesn't seem aware of the actual needs of my community. The safety of my child is non-negotiable.”

Lou, another parent, bluntly describes the situation as “very dangerous,” noting that many drivers simply “don’t abide by the law.” The petition calls for a dedicated traffic officer during school arrival and dismissal, arguing that these children deserve the same protection afforded to students at other schools.

Beyond the immediate danger at the intersection, parents also cite rising crime rates and drug-related issues in the neighborhood, further amplifying their calls for increased police presence. “There has to be money somewhere,” Paola insists.

The NYPD acknowledges the concerns, stating that the Commanding Officer of the 48th precinct is collaborating with community leaders and officials to secure additional School Crossing Guards. They also mention ongoing efforts with the Department of Transportation to improve signage and redesign the intersection.

While the NYPD reports no collisions at the intersection year-to-date and notes 67 summonses issued in the area, parents remain unconvinced, emphasizing the constant threat and the urgent need for a visible, proactive safety presence.

The situation highlights a deepening rift between the mayor’s vision for policing and the lived realities of families in The Bronx, who are increasingly fearful for the safety of their children.
