UMVA has learned that Netflix has released a first look at the live-action series Scooby-Doo: Origins, set to premiere in February 2027.
The 22-second preview, which began circulating on social media, shows Shaggy actor Tanner Hagen in action alongside a dog that bears a resemblance to Scooby-Doo. The clip starts from a dog's point of view, complete with the sound of panting, growling, and barking in a woodland setting.
As suspenseful music builds, Scooby adorably jumps up into Shaggy's arms, licking his face. The on-screen duo exudes the unconditional love that Shaggy and Scooby have for one another, with the teen smiling while 'Scoob' snuggles into him.
However, not everyone is convinced that the dog in the teaser is an accurate representation of Scooby-Doo. Social media critics have taken to X to express their disappointment, with some claiming the four-legged pal looks more like a chocolate Labrador than the iconic Great Dane.
The backlash has been swift, with @Trynith_Nebula declaring '#NotMyScoobyDoo' and @cremescene_ quipping 'Nah they can’t be serious'. Others have criticized the lack of 'expression' in the on-screen dog, with @SaparkyPiratebro calling it 'lifeless'.
Despite the negative feedback, some fans have fawned over how 'adorable' the dog looks and are 'excited' for the nostalgia hit. @KevinReed233 added 'This looks cool I don’t know why everyone is so upset', but it's clear that many are holding out for a more authentic representation of Scooby-Doo.
The iconic franchise, which was created in 1969, has seen several adaptations over the years. The 2000s live-action films starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Linda Cardellini, Matthew Lillard, and Freddie Prinze Jr. have become cult classics, and fans fear that the new version may not live up to expectations.
Scooby-Doo: Origins will star Maxwell Jenkins as Fred, Mckenna Grace as Daphne, and Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma, alongside Hagen as Shaggy. The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser in a secret role.
Will the new version of Scooby-Doo capture the hearts of fans in the same way as its predecessors? Only time will tell.
