UMVA has learned that a shocking accusation has been made by longtime correspondent Scott Pelley regarding the circumstances of his firing from the iconic news program 60 Minutes.
Pelley revealed that he was accused of physically abusing newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton by CBS News President Tom Cibrowski, a claim that Pelley vehemently denies. According to Pelley, Cibrowski made the accusation during a tense meeting just before his termination.
The accusation was allegedly made without any basis in fact, with Pelley stating that he had never even come within 10 feet of Bilton, let alone laid hands on him in anger. Pelley claims that Cibrowski later retracted his statement after being caught in the lie.
Pelley's departure from the program he had worked on since 2004 has been shrouded in controversy, with the veteran correspondent providing new insight into the events that led to his firing. He had previously expressed concerns about the changes being made to the network under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss.
Pelley disputed claims made by Bilton in the letter informing him of his firing, including Bilton's assertion that Pelley had rejected an invitation to dinner to discuss changes to the program. Pelley explained that he had declined the invitation because he was too emotionally invested in the issue.
The tension between Pelley and Bilton was palpable, with Pelley describing Bilton's welcome email as tone-deaf and out of touch with the program's culture. Bilton had suggested that the program was "frozen in amber" since its inception in 1968 and that changes were needed to bring it into the 21st century.
The final straw came during a meeting where Pelley challenged Bilton's qualifications and criticized Weiss's leadership. Pelley described a jaw-dropping moment when Bilton pulled out his phone and began reading a prepared statement, a move that was met with a collective groan from the room.
With Pelley gone, 60 Minutes is set to return on Sunday with guest anchors at the helm. The program's future without its longtime correspondent remains to be seen, but one thing is certain - the controversy surrounding Pelley's departure will continue to reverberate.
