UMVA has learned that Kennywood, the historic 130‑year‑old amusement park outside Pittsburgh, is tightening its summer chaperone policy amid a wave of violent teen brawls sweeping parks nationwide.
Effective June 12 and lasting through September 7, the park will require every guest 15 and under to be accompanied by an adult 21 or older who can produce a government‑issued photo ID. The adult must stay inside the park for the entire visit, though they need not hover beside each child at all times.
Parents, guardians or designated chaperones now bear full responsibility for minors; park staff will no longer act as supervisors. Anyone unable to prove they are at least 16 will be turned away at the gate unless a qualifying adult is present.
This decisive step follows a string of high‑profile altercations at amusement venues, including a massive brawl involving up to 100 people at Six Flags St. Louis and a 55‑person fight at Hersheypark that left dozens of teenagers charged.
“We have zero tolerance for disruptive behavior,” Kennywood announced in a recent social‑media post, emphasizing its commitment to preserving the family‑friendly atmosphere that has defined the park since 1898.
Under the new rules, chaperones must remain on‑site and be reachable by the children throughout the day. Organized groups such as school trips, church outings, and summer camps are exempt, as they already operate under existing supervision protocols.
Security will enforce the policy at entry and throughout the grounds, with any unaccompanied minor facing removal. The park also introduced a weapons‑detection checkpoint and limited bag sizes to 15 × 15 × 15 inches, allowing only medical and diaper bags as exceptions.
Visitors have applauded the move, calling it a proactive measure that puts safety first and curbs the “teen takeover” phenomenon that has turned public spaces into flashpoints for chaos.
As Kennywood rolls out these safeguards, the iconic rides—like the legendary Jack Rabbit coaster—and beloved treats such as its famous Potato Patch fries remain ready to welcome families who value a secure, enjoyable summer experience.
