A new vision of urban mobility emerged in Beijing, hinting at a future where small can be powerfully efficient. The unveiling of the Smart #2 signals a bold step for the brand, promising a vehicle designed for the realities of modern city life.
Wolfgang Ufer, leading Smart Europe, described the #2 as a complete “reinvention” – a respectful nod to the iconic original while forging a new path. He emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the design, a fusion of creativity from the Mercedes-Benz team and a deep understanding of European drivers.
The original Smart, a 1990s phenomenon, was born from a simple yet brilliant idea: minimize space. This philosophy continues with the #2, though it expands slightly in size, measuring just under 2.8 meters in length. This will position it as one of the smallest cars navigating UK roads.
While compact, the #2 doesn’t compromise on capability. Engineers are targeting a range of up to 186 miles on a single charge, alleviating range anxiety for daily commutes and urban adventures.
The future owner won’t be tethered to charging stations for long either. The vehicle boasts rapid charging technology, capable of boosting the battery from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes – a game-changer for those on the move.
The concept car first debuted in China, generating significant buzz before its planned unveiling of the production version at the Paris Motor Show later this year. It stands apart from ultra-compact electric quadricycles like the Citroën Ami and Microlino, offering a more conventional automotive experience within a diminutive footprint.
Details regarding top speed and performance remain under wraps, building anticipation for the official launch. However, the focus remains clear: a nimble, efficient, and stylish vehicle perfectly suited for the challenges and opportunities of urban living.
