The mysterious stranger who helped save a Las Vegas family from a predawn house fire is being hailed as a hero, but his identity remains unknown. According to the family's account, the man pounded on their front door, screamed "Fire!" and even grabbed a garden hose to battle the flames before disappearing in the chaos.
Home surveillance video captured the fire spreading rapidly in the family's backyard, with flames engulfing the area. The homeowner, Danna Shabtai, said she had gone to bed after asking children across the street to stop setting off fireworks near her home on July 4, hours before the fire broke out.
"My dog started barking, so I woke up and I stumbled to the door," Shabtai said, describing the moment she was awoken by the stranger's frantic knocking. "I opened the door and the gentleman was yelling, 'Fire! Fire!'" He pointed toward the back of the house, and Shabtai saw a wall of flames.
With the help of her sister, the family managed to escape the burning house, and the stranger helped keep the fire from spreading by grabbing a hose from the neighboring home. Shabtai believes his actions prevented a greater tragedy, and she is determined to thank him in person.
The family has taken to social media to identify the mystery man, expressing gratitude for his life-saving actions. "You're an angel. You saved our lives, and I'm really thankful for everything that you did," Shabtai said. "You didn't have to stop. You could have driven by and said, probably someone already called it in. But no, you took the time, and you woke us up, and you're a hero."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials have not yet determined an official cause. Shabtai believes the fire was sparked by children across the street setting off fireworks despite being asked to stop, and she is advocating for greater caution and responsibility when it comes to fireworks.
