The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a unique initiative to commemorate America's 250th anniversary. Millions of babies born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026, will receive a limited-edition commemorative Social Security card featuring the official Freedom 250 logo.
The commemorative cards will be issued automatically through the Enumeration at Birth program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number while completing birth registration paperwork at hospitals, birthing centers, or through licensed midwives. This process does not require any additional paperwork, fees, or registration beyond the standard birth registration process.
The commemorative cards will function exactly like standard Social Security cards, serving as one of the first official federal documents that millions of American children will receive. However, replacement and duplicate cards issued after the initial enrollment period will not include the Freedom 250 designation.
The SSA has warned parents to be cautious of scammers seeking to capitalize on the announcement. The agency emphasized that parents do not need to register or provide any information beyond the standard birth registration process, and SSA will never call, text, or email requesting payment to obtain a commemorative card.
The commemorative rollout aligns with the Trump administration's initiatives focused on young Americans, including Tax-Advantaged Investment Accounts intended to help eligible families begin saving for their children's futures. For most Americans, a Social Security card is among the first official federal documents they receive, and for babies born during America's 250th year, it will also serve as a lasting reminder of their special place in American history.
