A 45-year-old man has pleaded guilty to murdering his own mother after strangling her in her bedroom. Richard Clayton admitted to killing 74-year-old Angela Clayton and later calling the police to report himself.
The incident occurred at the couple's home in Newham, east London, on Tuesday, February 17. Officers arrived on scene at 12:48 pm alongside the London Ambulance Service, where they pronounced Mrs. Clayton dead at the scene.
Clayton was taken into custody and responded to police interviews either by answering no comment or remaining silent and pretending to be asleep. He was charged with murder the following day.
Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke expressed her condolences to Mrs. Clayton's family and friends, stating that while no outcome can undo their loss, they hope the conviction brings them some measure of closure.
The family of Mrs. Clayton released a statement saying that everything they have done over the last six months has been for their mother, Angela, to ensure she received the justice she deserved.
Clayton will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, September 22.
