Newsom EXPLODES: Berkeley Chaos Demands Answers!

Two days after a violent disruption at a Turning Point USA event in Berkeley, California, Governor Gavin Newsom finally addressed the incident through a spokesperson. The statement affirmed a fundamental principle: violence has no place within the exercise of First Amendment rights, even amidst protest.

The event, featuring actor Rob Schneider and author Frank Turek, was the final stop on the “This is the Turning Point” tour and became a focal point for unrest on the UC Berkeley campus. While a large demonstration occurred, authorities emphasized that the vast majority – over 900 people – protested peacefully, with only six arrests made.

The unrest centered around Zellerbach Hall, where agitators clashed with attendees. University police confirmed four students, all women between 20 and 22 years old, were arrested and charged with felony vandalism. Their names were withheld in initial reports.

Beyond the student arrests, two men were also taken into custody. Christopher Joseph Benton, 48 and unaffiliated with the school, faced misdemeanor charges for trespassing and resisting an officer. Jay Eduardo Maytorena, 22, a current or former student, was arrested on similar charges.

Viral videos captured the intensity of the confrontations, including a disturbing assault on a Turning Point USA supporter. Initial reports painted the incident as a simple attack, but further investigation revealed a more complex motive: robbery.

Police determined that Jihad Dphrepaulezz, 25, allegedly stole a necklace from the victim, and the ensuing struggle was an attempt to retrieve it. This detail shifted the narrative, adding a layer of criminal intent to the chaotic scene.

Newsom, attending a climate conference in Brazil at the time, remained publicly silent on the event itself, drawing criticism from conservatives who characterized the disruption as an attack on free speech. His office’s initial statement offered a general condemnation of violence but lacked specific commentary on the Berkeley incident.

The governor’s past interactions with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, including a discussion about free speech concerns regarding TikTok, added another dimension to the situation. Newsom had previously expressed reservations about the policing of speech within educational settings.

Turning Point USA representatives voiced strong condemnation, labeling the agitators as “Antifa thugs” and demanding accountability. They emphasized that peaceful events should not be subjected to harassment and violence.

The Department of Justice announced a formal investigation into the campus chaos, deeming the mob assault and intimidation unacceptable. They issued a demand to UC Berkeley to preserve all records related to security and event preparation.

UC Berkeley officials released a lengthy statement strongly condemning the violence and affirming their commitment to safeguarding free speech. The university pledged full cooperation with both the federal investigation and the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force, aiming to identify outside agitators responsible for the disruption.

The university’s statement underscored its dedication to protecting the rights of all members of the community to speak and assemble freely, signaling a commitment to upholding the principles of open expression on campus.
