COLLEGE SILENCES STUDENTS! Congressman DEMANDS Answers.

A Wisconsin congressmen’s attempt to mediate a dispute at Beloit College hit a wall of silence, revealing a troubling situation for students seeking to exercise their right to assemble. Representative Derrick Van Orden stepped in after a constituent reported obstacles in forming a new chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization.

The student, Jocelyn Jordan, detailed a frustrating series of roadblocks. Initial efforts to establish the chapter were met with a demand for a faculty advisor – a role repeatedly denied, with suggestions to simply rebrand the group and abandon the Turning Point USA name. This came alongside accusations that the national organization’s actions conflicted with the college’s stated values.

But the difficulties didn’t end there. As Jordan and her classmates began promoting their club, a disturbing harassment campaign erupted online. Initial posts contained inflammatory imagery, falsely labeling the students with hateful affiliations. The situation quickly escalated from accusations to direct threats, creating a climate of fear.

Concerned, Van Orden’s office reached out to Beloit College seeking clarification and a dialogue. The response, according to the congressman, was a complete dismissal. A scheduled phone call with the college president was abruptly cancelled at the last minute, with the school citing legal counsel’s advice.

Van Orden personally attempted to connect with the college’s attorney, leaving a message requesting a return call. Days passed with no response. The silence spoke volumes, fueling concerns about the college’s commitment to open discourse and student rights.

A college spokesperson later stated a return call *had* been made, two days after the initial message, but that Van Orden had not yet returned *their* call. This back-and-forth highlighted a growing communication breakdown and a perceived lack of urgency from the administration.

Jordan described a chilling effect on campus. “As a student, I should feel comfortable coming to campus no matter what beliefs I have,” she stated, “And, at this moment, I don't feel comfortable.” The initial response from the university to the harassment was dismissive, claiming an inability to identify the perpetrators.

The situation eventually prompted a police report after the harassment turned into explicit threats. This action finally spurred the college to ban one of the identified harassers – an alumnus working on campus – but the damage was already done. The incident left Jordan and her peers feeling vulnerable and targeted.

Beloit College maintains it is “committed to fostering respectful, open inquiry and encouraging a diversity of perspectives.” They insist they are following established campus policies for all new club formations and take allegations of threats and harassment seriously. However, for Jordan and her classmates, the experience paints a different picture – one of obstruction, intimidation, and a chilling of free expression.

The core of the issue remains: students seeking to engage in political discourse faced not only bureaucratic hurdles but a hostile environment that threatened their safety and well-being. The congressman’s attempt to intervene underscores the importance of protecting the fundamental rights of students on college campuses, regardless of their political beliefs.
