TikTok’s allure is undeniable, a digital vortex designed to capture and hold your attention. The app learns your preferences with unsettling speed, crafting a personalized stream of content that can easily consume hours of your day. But this finely tuned system isn’t foolproof, and sometimes, it delivers a deluge of content you actively dislike.
The problem is escalating with the rise of artificial intelligence. New AI video generators are unleashing a flood of remarkably realistic, yet often low-quality, content onto the platform. You’ve likely encountered this “AI slop” without even realizing its artificial origins.
While a fleeting AI-generated clip can be amusing, the constant presence of such content is more than just irritating. It poses a genuine threat, with some deceptive videos even tricking users into downloading malicious software onto their phones.
As AI-generated content becomes increasingly prevalent, our ability to discern truth from fabrication across all social media platforms is eroding. The normalization of synthetic media raises serious concerns about the spread of misinformation and the manipulation of public opinion.
TikTok is now responding with a new tool designed to give users more control over their feeds. The company is experimenting with a slider within the existing “Manage Topics” section of the app’s settings.
Currently, “Manage Topics” allows you to refine your algorithm by indicating your interest in categories like creative arts, current affairs, or sports. Soon, you’ll be able to adjust a slider specifically for AI-generated content, dialing it down to minimize its appearance.
The rollout of this feature is happening gradually, described as coming “in the coming weeks.” It may not be available to you yet, even with the latest app version, but it could appear on your device at any time.
To access the setting when it becomes available, navigate to your profile, then tap the menu icon. Select “Settings and privacy,” then “Content & Display,” followed by “Content preferences” and finally “Manage topics.”
Adjusting the “AI-generated content” slider to the left will reduce the amount of AI content you see, while moving it to the right will increase it. While a complete removal of AI content isn’t possible, this slider offers a significant step towards reclaiming control of your TikTok experience.
The hope is that by minimizing the presence of AI-generated content, users can effectively curate a feed that prioritizes authentic and engaging experiences, safeguarding against misinformation and digital deception.
