The latest incident unfolded at the London School of Economics, where Moffitt was invited by the university’s Conservative Society to discuss the importance of socially conservative values. Initially, the event fostered genuine debate, with students engaging in thoughtful discussion. But the atmosphere quickly soured.
Outside the discussion hall, a group of masked activists attempted to steal their materials and launched into a disruptive protest, amplified by a megaphone. The situation took a darker turn when demonstrators began to mock the recent death of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, a figure Moffitt deeply admires.
Moffitt described the protesters’ actions as a deliberate attempt at humiliation, a chilling display of animosity. He and his colleagues see their work as a continuation of Kirk’s legacy, striving to bring a similar movement to the United Kingdom.
This isn’t an isolated event. Moffitt recounts a disturbing pattern of attacks that have plagued Turning Point UK’s activism from the beginning. He’s been pelted with urine, glue, and even cans of beans, subjected to physical assaults, and relentlessly threatened online.
One particularly harrowing experience involved a man wielding a knife at Speaker’s Corner, a historic London location known for open debate, threatening Moffitt’s life. These threats and acts of violence haven’t silenced him, but have instead fueled his resolve.
Moffitt believes the success of Turning Point USA offers a blueprint for reaching young people with conservative ideas. He envisions expanding Turning Point UK, building on the foundation laid by Kirk, who actively encouraged conservative student activism during his visits to Britain.
He feels a profound sense of responsibility to carry on Kirk’s work, believing that conservatism is vital for the future of the West. The movement, he insists, must persevere, regardless of geographical boundaries.
Moffitt speaks with deep respect for Kirk’s widow, Erika, acknowledging the profound inspiration he draws from her husband’s vision and strategies. He hopes to one day express his gratitude and admiration directly.
