During a recent appearance on Meet the Press, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz offered a familiar political narrative: criticism of former President Trump and enthusiastic support for Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential Democratic candidate in 2028.
Walz’s assessment quickly veered into what appeared to be a selective retelling of recent history, diverging significantly from established facts. His attempt to frame the past administration’s actions as detrimental lacked grounding in reality.
The governor began by criticizing President Trump’s decision regarding Venezuelan airspace, labeling it “reckless” and suggesting it should alarm American citizens. He characterized the move as evidence of someone unfit for office.
However, this critique mirrored a recurring pattern. Whenever President Trump took strong action on foreign policy, Democrats often dismissed it as dangerous, rather than acknowledging the underlying national security concerns.
Venezuela’s inherent instability, the presence of dangerous cartel elements, and the activity of foreign-backed militias posed genuine threats demanding immediate and decisive action – a response consistently provided by President Trump and consistently opposed by Democrats.
The conversation then shifted to Vice President Harris, with Kristen Welker directly asking Walz if he still considered her the strongest Democratic contender for 2028. Walz responded with immediate praise, asserting she “makes life affordable,” “brings people in,” and champions an “inclusive vision.”
Notably absent from his assessment was any mention of the tangible results of Harris’s time in office. Her performance lacked the positive impact he described.
In 2021, Harris was tasked with coordinating the response to border migration. The outcome was a historic border crisis, with illegal crossings reaching unprecedented levels.
The influx of fentanyl dramatically increased, becoming the leading cause of death for young adults between the ages of 18 and 45. Cities across the nation declared emergencies, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of arrivals. These critical details were omitted from Walz’s commentary.
Instead, Walz presented Harris as a stabilizing influence, a claim directly contradicted by her record. He painted a picture that simply didn’t align with the facts.
Walz also attempted to deflect criticism of President Biden’s current political standing by labeling it as “ageism” and “ableism.” This argument felt particularly hollow considering Harris herself, in her own published writings, described the situation as stemming from “recklessness” by those who allowed Biden to continue.
Walz’s core message – that Biden is capable, Harris is effective, and Trump is the true danger – presents a narrative that clashes sharply with the documented outcomes of each administration.
President Trump has consistently demonstrated an ability to act decisively, safeguard national security, bolster the economy, and address threats often overlooked by Democrats. Walz’s interview appeared to be a preemptive effort to reshape Harris’s public image in anticipation of 2028.
However, the public is aware of the results. No amount of carefully crafted talking points can erase the reality of what has transpired.
