A powerful new monument is planned for Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens, a tribute to the Royal Regiment of Scotland as it marks two decades of service. The design centers around a majestic lion, but unlike the traditionally depicted rampant pose, this lion will be shown reclining. This deliberate choice, according to the sculptor, embodies a contemplative spirit – a moment for the regiment to acknowledge its history and consider its future.
The monument’s location, carefully selected near the iconic Ross Fountain, promises a striking visual impact. The sculpture itself will be substantial, measuring approximately two meters tall and three meters long, commanding attention within the gardens.
The Royal Regiment of Scotland emerged in 2004 from the amalgamation of six proud Scottish regiments, including the Royal Scots and the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. This pivotal moment in military history is directly reflected in the statue’s very construction.
Renowned Scottish sculptor Kenny Hunter has conceived the lion as being formed from six separate bronze sections, meticulously welded together. These visible seams aren’t flaws, but rather a deliberate artistic statement – a physical representation of the regiment’s origins and unified strength.

The regiment’s motto, “nemo me lacessit impunen” – meaning “no one provokes me with impunity” – will also be incorporated into the design, adding another layer of meaning and historical resonance.
The choice of materials – durable grey sandstone for the plinth and bronze for the lion – speaks to the enduring legacy the monument aims to represent. Foundations will be laid with reinforced concrete, ensuring stability for generations to come.
