MINNEAPOLIS ERUPTS: Deadly Shooting Fuels Immigration Fury!

A city already reeling from loss was plunged into further turmoil Saturday as federal immigration officers shot and killed a man in Minneapolis. The incident ignited immediate and widespread protests, a stark echo of recent unrest and a painful reminder of escalating tensions.

The victim, identified by his parents as 37-year-old Alex Pretti, a dedicated intensive care unit nurse, was approached by federal officers conducting an operation related to increased immigration enforcement. Officials claim Pretti “violently resisted” attempts to disarm him after he allegedly brandished a handgun. Police confirmed Pretti was a licensed gun owner.

A bystander’s video captured a disturbing sequence of events leading up to the shooting. It shows officers aggressively confronting individuals, shoving and striking them even before the fatal encounter. The footage depicts escalating physical contact, with officers surrounding Pretti and attempting to restrain him as he appeared to resist.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers stand guard as demonstrators gather near the site of where state and local authorities say a man was shot and killed by federal agents earlier in the morning in Minneapolis, Minn., on Jan. 24, 2026.

Then, a single shot rang out. The video offers no clear indication of its origin, lost amidst the chaos of surrounding officers. More shots followed, and Pretti fell motionless to the street. The immediate aftermath was a scene of stunned silence, quickly replaced by outrage.

Hundreds of protesters flooded the streets, their voices raw with anger and grief. They directed their fury at the federal officers, chanting demands for them to leave and accusing them of excessive force. The atmosphere was volatile, with protesters blocking streets and confronting agents.

The shooting occurred just over a mile from the site of another recent tragedy – the January 7th shooting of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. This proximity fueled the sense of a city under siege, a community repeatedly confronted with fatal encounters involving law enforcement.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara appealed for calm, urging both the public and federal agencies to exercise restraint and uphold the highest standards of law enforcement. He emphasized the need for “discipline, humanity and integrity” in all operations within the city.

Federal officials defended the officer’s actions, highlighting his eight years of experience and extensive training in the use of force. They framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of attacks on law enforcement across the country, a claim met with skepticism by many in the community.

Governor Tim Walz, having contacted the White House, called for an end to the large-scale immigration enforcement operation, arguing it was exacerbating tensions and endangering lives. The protests continued late into the night, a powerful expression of a community’s pain and frustration.

Witnesses described a scene of escalating aggression from federal agents, including the deployment of batons and flash bangs against protesters. One resident, Josh Koskie, voiced the fear felt by many: “They’re killing my neighbours!” The city braced for further unrest, caught in the crosscurrents of immigration policy and community outrage.
