Newly released bodycam footage captured a harrowing confrontation between an NYPD officer and a man wielding a knife, a moment that unfolded with terrifying speed in a Queens home.
The incident began with a desperate call from a family, reporting a mental health crisis. Their 22-year-old son, Jabez Chakraborty, was reportedly experiencing a severe episode and had already damaged property within the residence.
Footage shows officers approaching the home and being invited inside by a woman, attempting a calm and measured entry. The scene quickly shifted as they entered the living room and encountered Chakraborty holding a knife.
Despite repeated, clear commands to drop the weapon, Chakraborty refused to comply. A woman present attempted to intervene, to restrain him, but he continued to advance toward the officers, his intent menacingly clear.
An officer briefly secured a door, creating a temporary barrier, while continuing to plead with Chakraborty to disarm. The desperate pleas were ignored as Chakraborty violently breached the barrier, charging directly at the officer with the knife raised.
Faced with an immediate and lethal threat, the officer discharged his firearm, striking Chakraborty four times. The entire sequence, from initial contact to the use of force, transpired in a matter of seconds.
Chakraborty was immediately transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he remains in intensive care, his condition currently listed as stable but critical.
The incident sparked a swift and controversial response from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who publicly stated his belief that Chakraborty should not face criminal charges. He emphasized the need for mental health treatment over prosecution.
The Mayor described the profound pain of the family and acknowledged Chakraborty’s long-standing battle with schizophrenia, suggesting a different approach to such crises – one that prioritizes mental health professionals over immediate police intervention.
Chakraborty’s family released a statement criticizing the NYPD, alleging that the officer unnecessarily escalated the situation. They maintain that their son was calm and eating moments before the encounter, and that the officer’s actions were unduly aggressive.
The family’s statement asserts that the officer’s drawn weapon and shouted commands immediately heightened the tension, leading to the shooting within a minute of the officers’ arrival. They place no blame on Chakraborty for his actions during the crisis.
The released footage and subsequent reactions have ignited a debate about the appropriate response to individuals experiencing mental health emergencies, and the role of law enforcement in these sensitive situations.
