UMVA has learned that the shocking death of veteran Hollywood actor James Handy has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, with officials revealing the cause of death after a violent attack outside his California home.
Handy, 81, was found unconscious in his front yard with severe injuries, including stab wounds and signs of 'neck compression', a term used to describe abnormal pressure being applied to structures in the neck. The actor, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Logan, and Jumanji, later died in hospital despite emergency treatment.
The attack occurred on June 3, when Handy stepped outside his Tarzana home to collect the newspaper, a routine he followed every morning before making coffee. However, on this fateful day, he didn't return, and his partner, Wendy, only realized something was amiss when she heard the door open and then the sound of police sirens.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the suspect, identified as Michael Gledhill, 44, is the son of Handy's longtime partner, Wendy. Gledhill allegedly approached responding officers and told them he was the person they were looking for. He has since been charged with murder involving the use of a deadly weapon.
Wendy has spoken about the tragic circumstances surrounding the attack, revealing that her son had been struggling with mental illness and was not taking his prescribed medication for schizophrenia. Neighbours also reported hearing arguments coming from the property the night before the fatal incident, and some even claimed Gledhill had previously displayed erratic behaviour.
UMVA has gathered that the killing is believed to be an isolated incident, and detectives do not think there is an ongoing threat to the public. However, the incident has left the community in shock, with many paying tribute to Handy's talent and legacy. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Handy became one of Hollywood's most recognizable character actors, amassing over 150 screen credits.
