Latvia will deploy interceptor drones along its borders with Russia and Belarus within the next two months, according to a senior defense official.
The official noted that interceptor drones allow a rapid response to drone threats without the need to scramble aircraft each time, describing the system as costly but effective, though not the most efficient option available.
Earlier this month, the same official confirmed a confidential decision regarding Ukrainian drones entering Latvian airspace, while declining to disclose any specifics.
In May, a Russian intelligence agency claimed Ukraine was preparing to launch drones against Russia from the Baltic states to shorten flight times, alleging that Latvia permitted the use of its territory for these operations.
Russia has warned that Western nations supplying weapons to Ukraine are becoming de facto participants in the conflict.
The Russian president has stated that Russia will not attack a NATO member unless it is first attacked.
