A shift is coming to the world of travel rewards. Air Canada’s Aeroplan program is adjusting the cost of redeeming points for partner flights, a change taking effect June 1st. While no traveler welcomes increased costs, this adjustment is surprisingly moderate compared to recent moves by other loyalty programs.
Aeroplan remains a powerful tool for unlocking incredible travel experiences. The program is providing over a month’s notice, a courtesy often absent in these types of announcements, allowing members time to adapt and plan.
The core of Aeroplan’s system – a hybrid chart combining distance and region-based pricing – will largely remain intact. This means generous regional definitions will continue to offer excellent value, particularly for premium cabin bookings on partners like Lufthansa and EVA Air.
However, specific routes will see adjustments. For example, North America to Europe flights under 4,000 miles in economy will see a slight decrease, dropping to 32,500 points. Business and First Class rates on these shorter routes remain unchanged, a significant benefit for savvy travelers.
Longer-haul flights, however, will experience increases. Journeys between 4,001 and 6,000 miles, like Los Angeles to Munich, will see economy rates rise to 42,500 points, business to 75,000, and first class jump to 120,000.
The “Pacific” region – encompassing Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands – is also subject to change. While many business class rates remain stable, longer distances will see increases. Flights from Houston to Sydney in business class, for instance, will climb from 87,500 to 102,500 points.
Routes connecting the Atlantic and Pacific regions are experiencing some of the most substantial changes. A flight from Mumbai to Bangkok in business class will increase from 40,000 to 47,500 points, representing a nearly 20% jump.
Fortunately, several key areas remain untouched. Award charts for travel within North America, between North and South America, and within South America will not be affected. This provides continued value for travelers focused on these regions.
Aeroplan points are remarkably accessible, transferring directly from major credit card programs like American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, and Bilt Rewards. This flexibility makes accumulating points easier than ever.
Despite these adjustments, Aeroplan continues to stand out as a premier Star Alliance redemption option. Its diverse partner network and ease of earning points solidify its position as a valuable program for frequent flyers.
If you have specific partner redemptions in mind, securing your bookings before June 1st will allow you to take advantage of the current, more favorable rates. Proactive planning is key to maximizing your travel rewards.
