The movie Michael, a biopic about the life of Michael Jackson, has made history by becoming the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
The Lionsgate film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, has surpassed Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer at the box office, grossing $977.4 million despite still being in theatrical release.
This achievement comes despite Oppenheimer's incredible Oscar-winning run, which included seven awards from Best Picture to Best Director.
Over the past weekend, Michael has pulled in $9.2 million at the global box office, and anticipation remains that it will reach a billion worldwide.
The musical biopic has also surpassed Oppenheimer in terms of box office results, with a 46-day theatrical window compared to Oppenheimer's well-over six-month window before it landed on streaming service Peacock.
In comparison to other musical biopics, Michael has also surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody, which earned $911 million.
The film has been praised by fans, with some calling it 'the ultimate love letter to fans', despite controversy surrounding the alleged child abuse allegations that were removed from the final version of the film.
Originally, the film leaned into the turbulence of these allegations, but after a costly rewrite, it now steers firmly away from them.
The film starts with the Jackson 5 era and features a star-studded cast, including Jafar Jackson as the lead character, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, and Miles Teller as John Branca, Jackson's longtime attorney.
Michael is available to rent on various platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Sky Store.
