A veteran of hundreds of investigations, including violent crimes and homicides, he believes this isn’t a simple missing person case. “I’ve never seen a burglary that turned into a kidnapping in a situation like this,” he states, raising the chilling possibility of abduction.
Wright is deeply concerned about the proliferation of misinformation. He points to past cases, like the DC Sniper attacks, where erroneous witness reports derailed investigations. False narratives, once amplified, become accepted as truth, diverting crucial resources and hindering progress. “What was inferred became assumed, and what was assumed became amplified. That’s kind of what we’re dealing with in Nancy Guthrie’s case.”
He dismisses many leads as “red herrings,” including ransom notes and supposed sightings. He emphasizes Nancy’s age, frailty, and pre-existing health conditions. “The chances of survival are extremely low,” Wright says grimly. “Early on I said we should treat this as a no-body homicide, not a missing person.”

He also condemns the spread of digitally altered images, created using AI, purporting to reveal the suspect’s identity. “It is AI slop,” Wright declares. “Time, money, people, resources are not unlimited.” Every false lead consumes valuable resources that could be used to find the truth.
Wright’s most poignant concern is the impact of this speculation on the Guthrie family. “All these swivel chair commandos are doing is inflicting additional damage,” he says, his voice heavy with empathy. “A lie told once is a lie. But a lie told one thousand times starts to become the truth.”

He also fears the case may end in the grim discovery of a body. “The reward here is up to $1.2 million,” Wright concludes. “If that much money can’t get somebody to call in with the tip that finds Nancy, what does that tell you?”
