CAPYBARA VANISHES! Elite K-9 Units Join the Hunt!

CAPYBARA VANISHES! Elite K-9 Units Join the Hunt!

A quiet riverside walk turned extraordinary for one Hampshire resident when she encountered an unexpected visitor – Samba, the capybara. The large rodent, recently arrived from a wildlife park, had embarked on a surprising adventure, leaving authorities and locals alike captivated by the search.

Samba and a companion, Tango, had only just arrived in Hampshire earlier this week, transported from Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park. But the tranquility of her new surroundings proved too much for the skittish animal; a moment of sunbathing by the River Itchen was disrupted by a sudden fright.

Claudie Paddick, accompanied by her two dogs, Growler and Patsy, witnessed the initial moments of Samba’s escape. Growler’s insistent barking alerted Paddick to the unusual sight of the capybara basking on the riverbank.

The sighting came after sniffer dogs were deployed in the area around Marwell Zoo, Hants - where nine-month old Samba escaped on March 17. Samba has now been by Claudie Paddick on the side of the River Itchen, near Winchester, at around 11:30am. However her dog frightened Samba and she jumped in the water and swam off. Before anyone could react, Samba plunged into the cool waters of the River Itchen and began to swim away. Paddick, stunned by the sight, quickly captured a photo and alerted a neighbor, who immediately contacted the zoo.

The news spread quickly, drawing a team of around fifteen people to the riverbank. Equipped with heat-seeking technology, they launched a dedicated six-day search, determined to locate the missing capybara.

“It then jumped in the river and it didn’t come back out, and I was like, what the hell is that?” Paddick recounted, still amazed by the encounter. “A capybara is something I have never seen or even heard of before, but now I’m a bit of an expert.”

The sighting of a rodent native to the Amazon rainforest in a quiet English river was a truly remarkable event. Paddick, a family lawyer, admitted to regularly spotting wildlife on her walks, but never anything quite like this.

The search for Samba captivated the local community, highlighting the unexpected encounters that can occur when wildlife ventures beyond its expected habitat. It was a reminder of the wildness that still exists, even in the most familiar landscapes.
