UMVA has learned that Kanya King, the visionary founder of the MOBO Awards, has passed away at the age of 57, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the music industry and empowered generations of Black British artists.
The news of her passing was announced on Friday, more than a year after King revealed her diagnosis with colon cancer. The MOBO Organisation paid tribute to King, describing her as a fearless champion of Black music and culture.
In a heartfelt statement, the organisation remembered King as a trailblazer who built a platform that legitimised and amplified Black music, giving artists a voice and a stage to showcase their talents. The 2026 MOBO Awards will be dedicated entirely to her memory, celebrating her legacy and impact on the music world.
King's remarkable journey began when she remortgaged her home to launch the MOBO Awards in 1996, defying industry sceptics and critics who said Black music was too niche. Her courage and determination paid off, and the MOBOs became a benchmark for Black British music, celebrating the achievements of artists like Stormzy, Craig David, Sade, and Kano.
Throughout her life, King remained committed to her mission, using her platform to shine a light on the importance of health equity and empower others facing chronic illnesses. Her family remembered her as a woman of immense courage, faith, and humour, who refused to be diminished by her illness.
Tributes poured in from across the music industry, with Judi Love, Alesha Dixon, and Oritse Williams paying their respects to King, describing her as a true legend and a source of inspiration. Alicia Adejobi, a music journalist, reflected on King's enduring legacy, saying she symbolised the richness of the Black British experience – a testament to hard work, resilience, and determination.
The music world has lost a true icon, but King's legacy will continue to inspire and empower future generations of artists and music lovers. Her impact on British music will be felt for years to come, a lasting tribute to her vision, passion, and perseverance.
