Comedy IS DEAD: Late Night's EPIC Fail Exposed!

A growing chorus of voices is questioning the state of late-night comedy, accusing its current hosts of abandoning humor in favor of political lecturing. The criticism centers on a perceived disconnect between the shows and their audience, a shift from entertainment to something resembling a political science lecture.

Columnist Joe Concha recently described the current landscape as a strange hybrid – “MSNBC meets Abby Phillip over on CNN meets C-SPAN.” He argues that the shows have lost their comedic core, becoming platforms for one-sided political viewpoints delivered with a condescending tone.

Actor Vince Vaughn ignited the conversation with a blunt assessment on a recent podcast. He expressed a longing for authenticity, stating that late-night shows had become “agenda-based” and felt like unwanted, obligatory classes. Vaughn’s sentiment resonated with many who feel alienated by the overtly political nature of the programming.

Concha wholeheartedly agreed with Vaughn, labeling late-night comedy a “sanctimonious, self-important sermon.” He pointed to Stephen Colbert’s frequent interviews with Bernie Sanders – 21 times, to be exact – as evidence of prioritizing political agendas over genuine comedic exploration.

The critique extends to other prominent hosts as well. Concha contrasted the current state of affairs with the era of Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Jay Leno, noting their significantly higher ratings. He specifically called out Jimmy Kimmel for consistently focusing on complaints, particularly regarding a single former president, rather than offering broader, more universally appealing humor.

The core of the complaint isn’t necessarily about *having* political viewpoints, but about the perceived imbalance and the abandonment of the primary goal: to make people laugh. The concern is that late-night has traded genuine connection for self-righteous pronouncements, ultimately diminishing its appeal and relevance.
