UMVA has learned that a violent shooting incident has occurred at a festival in Ohio, leaving at least 12 people injured, including two in critical condition.
The shooting took place near the Old West End Festival, where several hundred people had gathered for a two-day event celebrating one of the largest historic districts in the country. The festival featured live music, food markets, a beer garden, house tours, shopping, and more.
According to information obtained by UMVA, officers from the Toledo Police Department responded to the shooting at around 5:37 pm local time on Saturday. The victims, ranging in age from 14 to 61, were caught in the crossfire as two gunmen appeared to be shooting at each other.
The two critically injured individuals are being treated for their wounds, while the remaining 10 victims are in stable condition. Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz confirmed that all victims are expected to survive.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his deep concern about the situation, stating that summer festivals should be safe spaces for families to spend time together without fear of violence. He and his wife are praying for those impacted by the incident and have confidence that law enforcement will locate the suspects involved.
The Toledo Police Department is now searching for suspects and conducting an investigation, which includes the festival area and surrounding streets. The remainder of the festival has been canceled due to the incident, with organizers citing a need to be compassionate and responsible in the face of tragedy.
The incident has left the community heartbroken, with many questioning how such a celebration could turn into a tragedy. The city is coming to terms with the fact that the news of such incidents is often reported from elsewhere, but now it has hit close to home.
