Terrifying horror movies to comfort watch this Halloween

Halloweenis just around the corner, andif you’re ready to lap up the spooky season, we’ve got some picks forthe best movies to get into the spirit.


Each year, many people don’t miss the chance to re-watch old classics like Halloween, Hocus Pocus or any of the Scream movies.


Or if something a bit more family-friendly is your thing – Casper and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial might be more down your alley.


At the same time as preparing the loot for eager Trick-or-Treaters or carving pumpkins, don’t miss the chance to settle in on the couch and be open to a frightful night in.


Whether you want a hair-raising flick or to have your socks completely scared off, there’s no shortage of options on offer.


Here are some ideas for some spine-tingling flicks tobinge-watchwithin the next week.

Hush – Tubi

Directed by legendary horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan,this 2016 slasher filmwas released a few years before he became a household name with shows like The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.


Hush was co-written by and starred his wife, actress Kate Siegel, who plays Maddie, a deaf-mute woman who starts being stalked by a masked killer in her own home, who decides to target her after murdering her neighbour.


In its review, Variety called Hush ‘tense and breathless’, while The Guardian said it was a ‘sharp, finely tuned thriller’.

The first movie in the Hell House LLC franchise, this 2015 found-footage supernatural horror film was written and directed by Stephen Cognetti.


Shot as a documentary, it follows a group of Halloween haunted house creators in the lead-up to the launch of their popular haunted attraction, Hell House. But on the night it opens, a ‘malfunction’ ends in the death of 15 fans and staff, with the movie then following an investigation into what really happened.


It was later followed by sequels, Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel, in 2018, Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire, in 2019, Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor, in 2023, and most recently, Hell House LLC: Lineage, in August this year.

Another film that centres on a haunted house, this 2019 slasher film was written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.


Set on a Halloween night, it follows a group of friends who stumble upon a haunted house that ‘promises to feed on their darkest fears, unknowing that the performers have a murderous intent’.


‘Haunt might be the scariest, and most realistic, movie about a haunted attraction,’ one review said of the film, which became the most-watched movie premiere of the year when it premiered on Shudder.

Released in 2021, thriller See for Me starred Skyler Davenport as Sophie, a visually impaired teenager who finds herself confronted by three criminals when they break into a home she’s been housesitting at.


Despite her inability to see the assailants, she has the help of an app – See for Me – which connects her to Kelly (Jessica Parker Kennedy), a gamer who uses the app to see Sophie’s surroundings and help guide her through them.


Critics called it a ‘stunningly executed’ film that kept them on the ‘edge of their seats’.

Talk To Me – Netflix

This Australian supernatural horrorwas a smash hit, grossing an impressive $92million (£69million) after being made on a $4.5million (£3.3million)


The film debut from YouTubers turned directors Danny and Michael Philippou, it followed a group of teenagers who discover they can communicate with spirits through a mysterious severed and embalmed hand.


Holding a 94% rating onRotten Tomatoes, it was labelled an ‘absolute nerve cooker’, and a ‘new horror classic’ with a ‘brutal ending’. A sequel is currently being developed.
