The Tenerife-bound flight began like any other, lifting off from Edinburgh Airport with passengers anticipating sunshine and relaxation. But within ninety minutes, a disturbing pattern of behavior emerged, transforming the journey into a harrowing experience for the cabin crew.
Joseph McCabe, fueled by alcohol, initiated a series of unwanted and aggressive advances. A flight attendant felt his hand on her buttocks while serving passengers, turning to find him smirking and offering a disturbing compliment about her clothing. He then brazenly inquired about her age and address.
The harassment didn’t stop there. McCabe slapped the buttocks of a male steward and attempted to hug a female employee, holding her for a full thirty seconds. He also placed his hands on another female crew member, escalating the fear and discomfort onboard.
Cabin crew issued McCabe a written warning, which he immediately tore up, signaling his refusal to comply. Faced with escalating aggression, a difficult decision was made: the captain, instructed by air traffic control, diverted the flight to Porto Santo.
Upon landing, McCabe’s behavior became even more erratic. He began dancing in the aisle, drawing the attention of Portuguese police who promptly boarded the aircraft and took him into custody. The disruption had brought the flight to a standstill.
Back in Scotland, McCabe pleaded guilty to four sexual offences at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. The court heard he had been drinking heavily following a family bereavement, and that he previously served five years as a private in the Royal Logistic Corps.
Sheriff Alison Stirling delivered a stern sentence: 46 weeks in prison and placement on the sex offenders registry for ten years. Non-harassment orders were also issued, prohibiting any contact with the victims indefinitely. The sheriff emphasized the “high level of culpability and harm” involved in McCabe’s actions.
The airline initially imposed a £5,000 fine, which McCabe refused to pay, resulting in a lifetime ban from flying with them. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unacceptable behavior faced by airline staff and the serious consequences that follow.
