NINE-YEAR-OLD SCORCHED: Deadly TikTok Trend Leaves Child Fighting For Life!

NINE-YEAR-OLD SCORCHED: Deadly TikTok Trend Leaves Child Fighting For Life!

Nine-year-old Caleb Chabolla’s curiosity led to a terrifying ordeal, a stark reminder of the hidden dangers lurking within seemingly harmless toys. A popular challenge circulating online prompted him to test a simple, yet devastating, idea: microwaving a Needoh cube.

The moment Caleb opened the microwave door, the small, gelatinous cube exploded, unleashing a wave of scalding material directly onto his face. A “blood-curdling scream” pierced the air as the hot substance seared his skin and instantly swelled his eye shut.

Rushing to the shower offered no relief; the goo was incredibly thick and stubbornly adhered to his skin. The severity of the situation quickly became apparent, necessitating an immediate trip to the emergency room and subsequent transfer to Loyola’s burn center in Chicago.

She said her 9-year-old son Caleb Chabolla put one of his Needoh cubes in the microwave a few weeks ago as they were getting ready for school. "I heard him scream and I saw him take off running towards one of our bathrooms and that stuff had popped on his face," she said. Grubb said when Caleb opened the microwave, it exploded all over his face, causing second-degree burns on one side and his hands. Whitney drove him to the emergency room.

Caleb suffered second-degree burns on one side of his face and both hands. Experts at the burn center explained the unique danger posed by the cube’s composition. The viscous, gelatinous material doesn’t simply transfer heat – it clings, intensifying the burn and prolonging the damage.

Burn outreach coordinator Kelly McElligott emphasized the critical warning: “Do not heat these up in any way, shape, or form.” Even exposure to hot water can trigger a dangerous reaction, as the material retains heat for an extended period.

This wasn’t an isolated incident. Loyola’s burn center has treated four children this year alone with similar injuries, all stemming from the same online challenge. Advanced practice nurse Paula Petersen noted Caleb was fortunate to avoid even more severe consequences.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of young people to online trends and their potential inability to fully grasp the serious risks involved. A simple desire to participate, to see what would happen, resulted in agonizing pain and lasting scars.

While platforms like TikTok claim to remove videos promoting such dangerous activities – reporting a 99.8% proactive removal rate in the last quarter of the previous year – the fact remains that these challenges continue to surface, endangering children. Open communication and a focus on safety are now more crucial than ever.

Caleb’s story serves as a powerful cautionary tale, a painful lesson learned about the importance of critical thinking and the potential consequences of blindly following online trends.
