BARRETT'S SHOCKING DEMAND: Will He EVER Wrestle Again?!

BARRETT'S SHOCKING DEMAND: Will He EVER Wrestle Again?!

Wade Barrett, a name forged in the fires of WWE competition and born in Preston, finds himself at a crossroads. Though content with life beyond the ring, a single match could pull him back into the squared circle – a confrontation with his longtime friend, Drew McIntyre.

Now 45, Barrett thrives as a commentator on SmackDown alongside Joe Tessitore, and lends his voice and likeness to the upcoming WWE 2K26 video game. But the prospect of facing McIntyre, a formidable opponent, sparks a conflicted response. He admits, with a laugh, that such a match would be “difficult to turn down,” even acknowledging the physical toll it would likely take.

“Physically, it would destroy me for good,” Barrett confessed, recognizing McIntyre’s raw power. “Back in my day, I could give as good as I got. I don’t know if I could still give as good as I would get from Drew. So, if that one did happen, hard to turn down, but that probably would be the end, the big goodbye.”

Despite maintaining impressive physical condition, Barrett is adamant about staying out of the ring, even declining opportunities to assist with training at the Performance Center. He’s wary of inadvertently tempting fate, of someone suggesting a high-profile return against a brutal opponent like Brock Lesnar or Sheamus.

A potential comeback was briefly considered during his time with NWA, working alongside Billy Corgan. However, his role was strictly as a commentator, and any talk of a match with then-NWA champion Nick Aldis remained firmly in the realm of “fantasy booking” among the locker room.

Barrett believes Aldis, the current SmackDown General Manager, still possesses considerable in-ring ability and could even compete at WrestleMania. He envisions a compelling showdown between the two GMs, perhaps with Adam Pearce, another seasoned performer. But he firmly insists: “Leave me out of this. I’m done. Let those two throw down. I’ll commentate!”

His commitment to WWE 2K26 was a massive undertaking, requiring 125 hours of voiceover work. Barrett sought guidance from the legendary Michael Cole, a true veteran of commentary, to hone his skills. This new role has proven unexpectedly fulfilling, providing a different kind of adrenaline rush.

“I 100% think that if I wasn’t commentating now, at some point I would have wanted to get back in the ring,” Barrett admitted. The energy of the show, the camaraderie with fellow wrestlers – both veterans and rising stars like Trick Williams and Je’Von Evans – satisfies a deep-seated need for connection and excitement.

Looking back on his career, Barrett is filled with gratitude. He recalls being told that a two-year run on WWE television was a significant achievement. He surpassed that expectation, enjoying a successful career, and now finds himself with a second, unexpected chapter.

“It’s insane to me,” he reflected, “that that kid who was watching wrestling back in north Wales or Cardiff… is still involved in this industry now and making a living from it.” It’s a testament to his talent, resilience, and enduring passion for the world of professional wrestling.
