For nearly two decades, the glittering spectacle of ballroom dancing has captivated audiences. But beneath the sequins and dramatic reveals, a core element of the show’s original charm is fading, according to former professional Kristina Rihanoff.
Rihanoff believes a return to the fundamentals – the pure artistry of ballroom and Latin dance – is essential. She recalls a time before elaborate props and dazzling projections, when the focus was solely on the connection between the dancers and the music.
When she first joined the show in 2008, the emphasis was undeniably on technique and skill. Group dances were performed live, and celebrities were challenged to truly learn the intricacies of ballroom and Latin styles, a standard she feels has subtly shifted over time.
Her early years on the show were marked by an unexpected partnership with John Sergeant, a political journalist who defied the judges’ scores by consistently winning the public vote. This highlighted the show’s unique power to connect with viewers beyond technical perfection.
Kristina’s journey continued with a series of memorable pairings, including actor Jason Donovan, singer Simon Webbe, and rugby star Ben Cohen. Her relationship with Cohen blossomed off the dance floor, resulting in their daughter, Milena.
After seven seasons, Kristina departed in 2015 following her partnership with TV host Daniel O’Donnell. While the show continues, she recently shared insights into the anxieties faced by the professional dancers behind the scenes.
The uncertainty surrounding annual contract renewals creates a period of intense stress for the dancers. Knowing their future hangs in the balance can take a significant toll on their mental wellbeing, a reality often hidden from the public eye.
Kristina explained that professionals are only contracted for a year at a time, leading to a nerve-wracking wait to discover if they will be invited back. This precarious situation is not new, but the current atmosphere has brought it into sharper focus.
Now running her own dance academy, Kristina reflects on her time with the show with a clear perspective. She understands the pressures of maintaining a popular program, but hopes the essence of authentic ballroom and Latin dancing will endure.
