GOVERNOR HOPEFUL'S SECRET LIFE: 400 DAYS AWAY – TAXPAYERS FOOT THE BILL!

GOVERNOR HOPEFUL'S SECRET LIFE: 400 DAYS AWAY – TAXPAYERS FOOT THE BILL!

The Nevada Attorney General’s travel expenses in 2024 alone reached $60,730, a figure that paints a picture of extensive time spent away from the state. This included a $2,819 trip to a luxury resort in Mexico and nearly $12,000 at the exclusive vacation destination of Martha’s Vineyard.

Records indicate a significant increase in out-of-state travel since taking office. Over his tenure, the Attorney General has reportedly spent at least 420 days outside of Nevada – almost 20% of his time as the state’s top legal officer.

The escalating costs and frequency of travel have drawn scrutiny, with some questioning whether the expenses align with the demands of the office. Critics suggest a pattern of prioritizing personal travel over the duties of the position.

A spokesperson for the Attorney General’s office explained the travel was connected to campaign events and official duties, funded by campaign contributions rather than state resources. These trips facilitated participation in bipartisan groups focused on critical issues like human trafficking, cybercrime, and the opioid crisis.

The Attorney General held a leadership position within the National Association of Attorneys General, requiring travel for meetings and collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies nationwide. These engagements were presented as vital for addressing challenges facing Nevadans.

However, the current spending contrasts sharply with that of his predecessor. The previous Attorney General spent less than $5,000 on out-of-state travel during his final year in office, a fraction of the current figure.

The Attorney General’s travel patterns have evolved over time. Initial years saw modest out-of-state spending, under $15,000 annually, but expenses climbed dramatically to over $52,000 in 2022.

Adding another layer to the situation, the Nevada Commission on Ethics is currently investigating the Attorney General regarding potential improper solicitation of gifts and the use of his office for personal benefit. Documents related to the investigation have been made public.

Calls for transparency regarding the travel expenses have gone unanswered, with critics demanding a detailed accounting of the purpose and justification for each trip. The lack of clarity fuels concerns about accountability.

The debate over the Attorney General’s travel has become a focal point in the ongoing political landscape, with opponents highlighting the contrast between his time away and their own commitment to serving the state.

Before becoming Attorney General, he served in the Nevada State Legislature, rising to the position of majority leader. This legislative background shaped his early political career.
